Philippine’s “Heartbreak” Launched in Singapore

Heartbreak, a collection of romantic short stories edited by Palanca awardee Cel Coscolluela, was exhibited at the Singapore World Book Fair held last May 25-June 3, 2007 at the Suntec International Convention Center.

Along with Rex Publishing’s Speak Up, Heartbreak was chosen to represent the Philippines in a book launching hosted by the ASEAN Book Publisher’s Association (ABPA). Cozy Reads Publishing gave copies of Heartbreak to ABPA President Mr. Thanachai and Singapore’s Minister of Education Mr. Gan Kim Yong.

Heartbreak showcases some new literary voices alongside prizewinning authors in a unique mix of funny and tragic stories on matters of the heart. With writers originating from Cebu, Zamboanga, Cagayan de Oro, Pampanga and Metro Manila, each narrative embodies a distinctly Filipino experience in contemporary times. Well-written and brimming with wit and wisdom, the collection proves itself a fine and enjoyable read. Heartbreak is available at Booktopia, Fully Booked, National Bookstore and Powerbooks.

Cozy Conversations On Heartbreak

We would like to thank everyone who attended our Heartbreak book launch last February 9. We promised everyone a cozy conversation and based on the free-flowing discussion that transpired that evening, we definitely delivered.

We just hope that our authors (Carljoe Javier, Ana Maria Villanueva, Sharleen Banzon and Chinggay Labrador) felt just as glad as we lined them up and encouraged readers to bombard them with questions both professional and – because of approaching Valentine’s Day – personal. They all answered good-naturedly and would occasionally throw loaded questions at one another.

Even we were not exempt from answering queries regarding Philippine publishing, but we were happy to answer anything as long as it wasn’t, “Why Heartbreak?”

Writers E.C. delos Reyes and I.P. Goze, and editor, Cel Coscolluela, were unable to dodge heavy traffic and thus arrived late, but we think all three of them were more than relieved to have missed most of the interrogations. The ever elusive Sally Magdiwang was also present but preferred to lurk in the audience and to fire her own queries at her unsuspecting fellow authors.

We had guests who stepped in just because they were curious about our posters. (Okay, okay…so we lured them in with free donuts and coffee. We confess.) But they must have enjoyed the discussion because not only did they stay throughout the program, but they also bought the book. Afterwards, they enthusiastically went around having their books signed. Caffeine and sugar-high? Possibly. But we’d like to think they were just wizened readers who recognized a good thing when they saw it. Whatever the reason, the evening was more successful because of their participation and support.

We are also grateful to Rowena and Robert who generously offered their store, Booktopia, to be our venue. Special thanks also go to our event partner, GlobalSynergy Corp., distributor of decorative reading lamps (available at Home Plus and Robinson’s Department store).

We hope to see all of you at our next launch. Cheers!
